** everything; all; totality; every part; all of it; the whole lot; entire outfit
~~ whole kit and caboodle; whole shebang; whole hog; whole ball of wax; whole shtick; full monty; everything but the kitchen sink; whole enchilada; whole nine yards; lock, stock, and barrel; all parts and whole property
!! In the 18th century, each soldier had to carry all his possessions and equipment in a “kit,” the use of “kit” survives only in the full slang “kit and caboodle” today.
!! Boodle could have come from “buddle,” which in turn was probably Old English “bottle,” meaning “bunch or bundle.” Boodle also meant“a collection.” Boodle could also have come from the Dutch boedel, meaning “household goods and possessions.”
!! Since “kit” and “caboodle” both mean virtually the same thing, the expression is a redundancy.
>> They arrived with the whole kit and caboodle, ready for the Arctic trip.
>> The forest fire destroyed their house, the whole kit and caboodle.
