!! The origin of the phrase referred to a person, probably a relative dead in disgraceful circumstances, being hidden away in a closet or cupboard until he or she turned into a skeleton.
!! When dissecting human bodies was unlawful, grave robbers would dig up graves to get cadavers of executed criminals and sell them to the doctors. After the doctor had used it he still didn’t want to give up the skeleton, so it was usually hid in a closet.
