~~ cry/holler/yell uncle; cry quits; admit loss; concede defeat; accept one was beaten; give up; throw in the towel/sponge; wave the white flag; eat crow/dirt; beg for mercy
!! This 1900 imperative is an Americanism at a schoolyard fight. The winner would demand, “Say uncle when you’ve had enough of a beating,” meaning the child who loses should show “respect” by calling the winning child “uncle.”
!! In Iowa Citizen 9 October 1891 was the following. A man ordered the parrot to say “uncle,” but the parrot would not. He half-twisted its neck, and said, “Say ‘uncle,’ you beggar!” and threw it into the fowl pen with ten prize fowls. Later, he found nine dead fowls, and the parrot standing on the tenth twisting its neck and screaming: “Say ‘uncle,’ you beggar! say ‘uncle.’”
