    !! The metaphor alludes to insects crawling out of the interior wooden sub floor, baseboards or moldings of a house where they have been hidden, when a contractor is replacing a carpet with hardwood floor.

    !! The expression is frequently used to describe a long-obscure politician who sees an opportunity to become a candidate for the next election, and comes out to the fray.  It is meant to say about someone who is not invited or wanted.
