    !! “Caught flat-footed” could have come from horse racing during the time of Queen Anne inEngland. Any horse with all four feet flat on the ground, instead of dancing forward on its toes when the gate, or barrier of tapes and webbing, is raised, is at a disadvantage and would lose some distance right at the start.
