    !! Charles Funk believed the idea sprang from a child’s maneuvers trying to get into a sitting position on a tree branch/bar. The child would hang by his arms, lift up his legs through his arms and over the branch/bar then either continue on in a somersault or hook his legs up over the limb. A mother watching this, saw a resemblance to removing the pelt from a cat, from the forelegs and down over the body.
