Burn the Candle at Both Ends——勞累過度

    !! The wording of this expression was originated inFranceand was translated into English in Randle Cotgrave’s Dictionary (1611), where it referred to wasting one’s material wealth like burning the candle wastefully. Nathan Bailey’s Dictionary of English (1730) had it: "The candle burns at both ends. Said when husband and wife are both spendthrifts."

    !! It subsequently acquired a more general and current meaning. In 1857, Charles Kingsley wrote in Two Years Ago: "By sitting up till two in the morning, and rising again at six … Frank Headley burnt the candle of life at both ends."
