Take the Wind Out of Someone's Sails——使氣餒

    !! This expression alludes to impeding a competing sailing vessel by sailing to windward of it and thereby robbing it of the wind.  The term was used literally until about 1800.

    In 1822, Sir Walter Scott showed the transferred meaning in The Fortunes of   Nigel: "He would take the wind out of the sail of every gallant."
